Eric and Linda Carpenter-Grantham wrote a law in Maryland that puts a butterfly on the driver's license — a symbol that tells a first responder, before a word is spoken: I have a hidden disability. I may not respond the way you expect. More than 25,000 Marylanders have requested it. Bills are moving in Delaware, Washington, DC, and New York. Forty-nine states are waiting — and a mother and son are ready to go get them.

Why this matters

For a person with autism, a hearing impairment, or any hidden disability, a traffic stop can go wrong in seconds — not out of malice, but out of misunderstanding. The butterfly speaks first — so a misunderstanding never has to. Eric said it best, in the words that started everything: "We gotta do something now."

This movement runs on a family's determination — testimony by testimony, statehouse by statehouse, story by story. Your gift is what turns determination into travel, training, and change.

Education

Training materials for first responders, school and community programs, and plain-language guides — so that everywhere the butterfly lands, people know what it means.

Eric and Linda are forming a nonprofit to carry Eric's ID Law nationwide. While the 501(c)(3) application is prepared and pending, gifts support the mission directly and are not yet tax-deductible; once the IRS issues its determination, deductibility is expected to apply retroactively to gifts made after incorporation.
